Kunst ist immer politisch. Die Autorin Toni Morrison sagte: „All good art is political! There is none that isn’t.“ George Orwell meinte: „All art is propaganda.“ Und ein Zitat von Bertolt Brecht lautet: „Kunst ist nicht ein Spiegel, den man der Wirklichkeit vorhält, sondern ein Hammer, mit dem man sie gestaltet.“ 

Schon seit Jahrtausenden gibt es Spuren politischer Kunst. Zum Beispiel wurden antike Kunstwerke aus Ägypten und Griechenland gefunden, die die damaligen politischen Eliten kritisierten. Von damals bis in die heutige postmoderne oder digitale Zeit haben sich Künstler*innen für das interessiert, was in ihrer Gesellschaft geschieht, und sich für das eingesetzt, was ihnen wichtig ist. 

Auch in jüngster Vergangenheit haben sich Künstler*innen aller Disziplinen in den unterschiedlichsten Formen ausgedrückt und engagiert. Autor*innen und Journalist*innen haben in ihren Texten Korruption und Rassismus thematisiert. Maler*innen haben auf den Klimawandel aufmerksam gemacht. Musiker*innen haben auf Gagen verzichtet und sich für kulturelle Boykotte eingesetzt – etwa gegen das damalige Apartheid-System in Südafrika. In unserer Gegenwart häufen sich Themen wie die Klimakrise, moderne Sklaverei im Kongo, der Krieg im Sudan und der anhaltende Genozid in Palästina – auf Letzteres konzentrieren wir uns heute. 

Seit dem 7. Oktober 2023 hat der israelische Staat seine jahrzehntelange Unterdrückung der Palästinenser zu einem Genozid eskaliert. Vor Kurzem bestätigte die Menschenrechtsorganisation Amnesty International nach einer einjährigen Untersuchung, dass das, was derzeit im palästinensischen Gebiet Gaza geschieht, ein Genozid ist. Der Internationale Gerichtshof erklärte die israelische Besetzung Palästinas für illegal und bestätigte, dass Israel für Apartheid verantwortlich ist. Der Internationale Strafgerichtshof stellte einen Haftbefehl gegen den israelischen Ministerpräsidenten Benjamin Netanyahu aus. 

Trotzdem wird der Massenmord täglich fortgesetzt und von westlichen Ländern unterstützt oder ignoriert. Stimmen, die Israel kritisieren, werden unterdrückt. Auch die Schweiz hat bislang keine Sanktionen ausgesprochen. In Basel wurde der pro-palästinensischen Künstlerin und Aktivistin Leila Moon vor Kurzem vom Amt für Kultur der Basler Kulturförderpreis aberkannt. 

Als Reaktion und Protest haben Basler Künstler*innen einen Unabhängigen Kulturförderpreis ins Leben gerufen, der sich laut eigener Website für eine freie und unabhängige Kultur einsetzt. 

Solidarität durch Musikkompilationen:

Eine weitere Form von Aktivismus ist Solidarität. Seit Beginn des Genozids haben sich Musiker*innen weltweit mobilisiert, um Gelder zu sammeln und die Leidenden in Palästina, und die ebenfalls betroffenen Nachbarregionen, zu unterstützen. Die meisten Spendenaktionen laufen über die Plattform Bandcamp.  Es ist beeindruckend zu sehen, wie viele Menschen sich mobilisiert haben und wie breit das musikalische Spektrum ist – von Noise und Goth über Punk und Indie bis hin zu Techno und Drum ’n’ Bass. 

Alle erwähnten Kompilationen sammeln Gelder mit besten Absichten und leiten diese weiter. Allerdings ist es derzeit für viele NGOs unmöglich, Hilfsmittel oder Gelder nach Gaza zu bringen. Deshalb gibt es auch Kompilationen aus Deutschland, deren Gelder für Gerichtskosten die entstanden sind infolge des Versammlungsverbots für pro-palästinensische Proteste. 

Hier ist eine Auswahl an Kompilationen die uns sehr gut gefallen, am Ende des Artikels sind aber noch viele weitere zu finden, organisert nach stil.

1. Artists Without Borders

Bereits am 10. November 2023 wurde eine spannende Sammlung aus Folk, Ambient und elektronischer Experimental-Musik veröffentlicht. Die Spenden gehen direkt an Médecins Sans Frontières. 

2. Sarab: In Solidarity With Palestine

Diese Sammlung konzentriert sich auf experimentelle Musik mit 69 Songs von internationalen Künstler*innen aus Nordafrika und dem Nahen Osten und auch einigen aus der Schweiz.

3. Women of Noise for Palestine

 Veröffentlicht im Dezember 2023 vom Noise-Kollektiv Women of Noise. Ihre Spenden laufen nicht über Bandcamp, um Gebühren zu vermeiden. Wer ihnen einen Beleg einer Spende an den **Palestine Children's Relief Fund** schickt, erhält einen Download-Code für alle 42 Songs. 

4. Palestine Solidarity Compilation

Dieses Kollektiv funktioniert ähnlich wie Woman of Noise und verlangt einen Zahlungsbeleg an eine der Organisationen, die auf ihrer Bandcamp-Seite gelistet sind. Die Sammlung umfasst Lo-Fi Punk und Bedroom Punk vom feinsten. 

5. Goths for Palestine

Diese Compilation fokussiert sich auf Darkwave, Goth und Postpunk. 

6. Letters to a Future Palestine

Fokussiert auf elektronische Music, sind diese songs Zusammenarbeiten zwischen palästinensischen und internationalen Künstler*innen. Die Spenden gehen an World Central Kitchen. 

7. Enough

Eine der qualitativ besten Kompilationen mit großen Namen wie Nicolas Jaar, Legowelt, BokBok und Matrixxman. 

8. Composers for Palestine

Diese einzigartige Compilation ist eine Sammlung von Indie-Game-Komponist*innen, die gemeinsam für Organisationen wie UNWRA Gelder sammeln. 

9. Land 01 (​أ​ر​ض ٠​١​)​: A compilation for the displaced in Lebanon

Diese Kompilation besteht exlusiv aus Compositionen Libanesischer Künstler*innen und sammelt gelder für Libanesische Flüchtende.

Art is always political. Author Toni Morrison said, "All good art is political! There is none that isn’t." George Orwell stated, "All art is propaganda." And a quote by Bertolt Brecht reads: "Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it." Traces of political art have existed for thousands of years. For example, ancient artworks from Egypt and Greece have been found that criticized the political elites of their time. From then until today’s postmodern or digital era, artists have shown interest in what is happening in their societies and have stood up for what matters to them.

Even in recent history, artists of all disciplines have expressed themselves and engaged in activism in various forms. Writers and journalists have addressed corruption and racism in their texts. Painters have raised awareness about climate change. Musicians have waived fees and supported cultural boycotts – for example, against the apartheid system in South Africa.

In our present time, issues such as the climate crisis, modern slavery in Congo, the war in Sudan, and the ongoing genocide in Palestine are becoming more prevalent – today, we focus on the latter.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli state has escalated its decades-long oppression of Palestinians into genocide. Recently, the human rights organization Amnesty International confirmed after a year-long investigation that what is currently happening in the Palestinian territory of Gaza constitutes genocide. The International Court of Justice declared Israel’s occupation of Palestine illegal and confirmed that Israel is responsible for apartheid. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the Israeli Prime Minister.

Nevertheless, the mass killings continue daily, supported or ignored by Western countries. Voices criticizing Israel are being suppressed. Switzerland has yet to impose any sanctions. In Basel, the pro-Palestinian artist and activist Leila Moon recently had her Basel Cultural Award (Kulturförderpreis) revoked by the Office of Culture.

In response and protest, artists in Basel have established the Independent Cultural Prize Basel, (Alternativer Kulturförderpreis) which, according to its website, advocates for free and independent culture.

Solidarity Through Music Compilations:

Another form of activism is solidarity. Since the beginning of the genocide, musicians worldwide have mobilized to raise funds and support those suffering in Palestine, as well as affected neighboring regions. Most fundraising efforts operate through the platform Bandcamp. It is impressive to see how many people have mobilized and how diverse the musical spectrum is – ranging from noise and goth to punk and indie, and from techno to drum 'n' bass.

All mentioned compilations raise funds with the best intentions and forward them accordingly. However, it is currently impossible for many NGOs to deliver aid or funds to Gaza. Therefore, there are also compilations from Germany whose funds go towards legal costs incurred due to bans on pro-Palestinian protests.

Here is a selection of compilations that I personally like very much. However, there are many more listed below, roughly organized by style and or genre.

1. Artists Without Borders

Released on November 10, 2023, this exciting collection features folk, ambient, and electronic experimental music. The proceeds go directly to Médecins Sans Frontières.

2. Sarab: In Solidarity With Palestine

This compilation focuses on experimental music with 69 tracks by international artists from North Africa and the Middle East, as well as some from Switzerland.

This collective operates similarly to Women of Noise and requires proof of payment to one of the organizations listed on their Bandcamp page. The collection features top-notch lo-fi punk and bedroom punk.

Focused on electronic music, these songs are collaborations between Palestinian and international artists. Proceeds go to World Central Kitchen.
