TIMEZONES PODCAST-SERIE AUF RADIO X

Die Podcast-Reihe TIMEZONES erkundet die vielfältigen Realitäten von Künstler*innen und ihrer Praktiken weltweit und stellt die Frage: Was bedeutet es heute, in verschiedenen Ländern, Städten und Kontexten im Bereich Kultur und Kunst zu leben und zu arbeiten? Die Reise geht von Nairobi über Rio de Janeiro bis nach Beirut und Mount Makiling auf den Philippinen / die Ukraine und verarbeitet die Gedanken und Stimmungen der Künstler*innen, ihre sozialen, politischen und intellektuellen Realitäten und ihre(Lebens-) Philosophien zu künstlerischen Audiocollagen.

TIMEZONES spielt dabei mit Formaten und Inhalten: der Podcast bewegt sich zwischen Journalismus und Experiment, Dokumentation, Ethnografie, Fiktion, Klangkunst oder Improvisation. Georgrafische Grenzen, Zeitzonen, Genres und Praktiken sollen überschritten und mit neuen künstlerischen Formen des Austauschs, des Zuhörens und des Erzählens experimentiert werden. Gemeinsam mit lokalen Produzent*innen und Künstler*innen entstehen dabei sehr persönliche Portraits und aktuelle Geschichten aus Städten rund um den Globus, die einen sehr subjektiven Eindruck in das weltweite und aktuelle Musik-und Kunstgeschehen ermöglichen.

TIMEZONES ist ein gemeinsames Projekt des Goethe-Instituts und Norient, dem weltweiten Redaktionsnetzwerk für zeitgenössische Musik- und Medienkulturen.

Radio X ist neu als Partner mit an Bord: Als Weiterführung der im 2022 gestarteten Sendereihe airtime!, die künstlerischen Stimmen aus dem Globalen Süden und Osten Gehör verschafft, strahlen wir einmal im Monat eine Podcast-Folge aus.

The TIMEZONES podcast series plunges into the world of artists and their practices, asking: what does living and working in culture and the arts involve in different countries, cities, and contexts today? The experimental journey goes from Nairobi via Rio de Janeiro to Beirut and Mount Makiling in the Philippines/Ukraine and brings the he artists’ thoughts on their moods, their social, political, and intellectual realities and their philosophies (of life) into experimental audio collages.

The TIMEZONES podcasts run the gamut of formats and content, from straight journalism to experimental and documentary approaches, ethnography and fiction, sound art, and improvisation. The series endeavors to create new artistic forms of storytelling, listening and exchange across the boundaries of geography, time zones, genres, and practices. Together with local producers and artists, the podcast creates very personal portraits and current stories from cities around the globe, which allow a very subjective impression of the worldwide and current music and art scenes.

The Timezones Podcast Series is co-initiated and co-produced by the Goethe-Instituts and Norient, the worldwide platform and network for contemporary music and media cultures.

Radio X is now on board as a partner: As a continuation of the series airtime!, which was launched in 2022 and which makes artistic voices from the Global South and East heard, we broadcast a podcast episode once a month.

Früsch: Sinead O'Brien, Protomartyr, Dengue, Dengue, Dengue und Mathew Johnson

Die Radio X Musikredaktion stellt Euch wöchentlich ihre schönsten Neuentdeckungen genauer vor. Die Rubrik “Früsch” gibt es jeden Donnerstag um 14 Uhr und in der Wiederholung am Sonntag um 16 Uhr. von Danielle Bürgin

Die Irische Sängerin Sinead O'Brien stellt mit Strangers in Danger die zweite Vorabsingle aus ihrer Dan Carey (Speedy Wunderground) produzierten Debüt EP Drowning in Blessings vor. Luzid und surreal umschreibt sie mit ihrem Singature Sound ein Bild, das ihr während eines Konzertes erschienen ist “Plastic flowers in bloom and the sound of soccer.”. Ein Bild, das sie nicht mehr losgelassen hat und in diesem Song weiter erforscht wird. So teilt O'Brien mit: "I couldn’t make sense of it — I wrote it down and later began to take it apart. It’s about a kind of duality where something is divided by having two apparently conflicting meanings. A feeling is mirrored in an external scene and illustrated in another language. The image simplifies the problem because it just is. It exists. With all of its complexities and contradictions. I felt connected to various images and occurrences around me and began sound-tracking these mini scenarios." Die EP erscheint am 16. September via Chess Club.

Freunde des melancholischen Leidens, Protomartyr, haben letzte Woche ihr fünftes Studioalbum (spöttisch betitelt: Ultimate Success Today) veröffentlicht und legen nun ein Musikvideo für June 21 nach. Stets der persönlichen Alltagsverzweiflung des amerikanischen working class umhersinnierend, soll dieser Song einen Grad der beschwerten Nostalgie nachempfinden. So sagt Songschreiber Joe Casey: “[It’s about] nostalgia and regret under the dwindling shade [...] For instance, there’s a translated lyric from Alexander Robotnick’s song ‘Problèmes d’Amour’ [‘it’s on ice but it won’t keep’]. A 12-inch remix of that song was so popular in Detroit that it became the theme for WJLB and was used in their ‘Strong Songs’ ad campaign. Hearing that song evokes in me the hiss of the summer grass, the whine of a [Honda] Spree’s 2-stroke 50cc engine, the rising horror of cicadas, and the verdant immolation of the summer. I hope this feeling was captured in ‘June 21.'”

Dengue, Dengue, Dengue - das mystische Duo aus Lima, Peru, hat nicht nur einen neuen Release veröffentlicht, sondern auch ihren neuen Künstlernamen bekannt gegeben: die beiden stets maskierten Musiker heissen neu DNGDNGDNG. "Continentes Perdidos" (verlorene Kontinente auf Deutsch) erschien am 17. Juli via On The Corner Records. Die fünf neuen Tracks sind von stark von der UK-bass Subkultur sowie von afrikanisch-peruanischen Rhythmen geprägt. Leider musst ihre Tournee (inklusive ihr geplanter Auftritt am Basler Polyfon Festival) auf Eis gelegt werden. Wir freuen uns umso mehr über neue Musik der beiden Produzenten. Für die Radio X-Playlist ausgesucht haben wir das Stück "Atlantida".

Erst am 7. August erscheint der Mathew Johnson Remix des Liam Mour-Tracks "Duoro". Der kanadische Hardware-Spezialist Mathew Johnson (der schon mehrmals das Nordstern besucht hat) hat dem Track eine episch, melancholische Note in Form von Bläsern und anderen analogen Instrumenten verpasst. Erschienen ist der Remix auf dem neu gegründeten Ode To Youth Plattenlabel. Wir stellen euch dieses elektronisch-analoge Meisterstück schon ab dieser Woche vor. (Leider noch nicht online, dafür bei uns on air).
